The ultimate runDisney event is called the Goofy Challenge. The challenge is a half marathon on Saturday morning and then a full marathon on Sunday morning. For doing both events, you get a third medal--the Goody medal! I have several friends who just competed the Goofy Challenge this past weekend at Walt Disney World. I have heard race reports ranging from the experience being completely amazing to absolute hell. I feel like I am trained enough from my half marathons that the half would be fairly easy, but doing the full the next day is what terrifies me! I feel well enough the day after a half that I could do another half--but a full, that is completely different animal!
If I ever attempt a full, the runDisney Marathon would be at the top of my list. The only other full marathon I would consider doing is the Nike Women's Marathon in San Francisco. If I ever do a full marathon, I think I will only do one. I sort of feel like if I am going to do a full marathon, I might as well go all the way and go Goofy!
What do you think of the Goofy Challenge? Would you ever consider doing it?

Right now? No. I wouldn't do a half Sat, full Sun. I would do back-to-back halves. Why not? I've done 3 5ks in a week (Sat, Sat, Sun) and an 8k Sat and a half on Sun. I'm just not up to a marathon. I know I can do one if I chose, I just don't want to. That could change, but until then, no Goofy challenge for me!
ReplyDeleteI am planning to do the Goofy in 2014 and I can't wait! Dont get me wrong I am scared but I think it will be amazing!
ReplyDeleteRight now no I wouldn't want to but I think it would be an awesome goal. And if I was going to do it I would want to do the disney ones and get the goofy medal too!
ReplyDeleteI just completed the Goofy Challenge this past weekend. It was an awesome experience for me, but I watched people on the course that were absolutely dying of the heat and perhaps being under trained. It is a huge time commitment to train for the back to back race days and the fact that I am older and do not work helped. Make sure you follow a training plan that is specific for the Goofy Challenge. It is a tough race, both mentally and physically. (PS, I will have a recap in a few days!)
ReplyDeleteI looked so hard! I was following you all on FB and Twitter. You guys inspire me!
DeleteNo, at the moment I would not do the Goofy challenge because the farest I can go is a 5K. I am hoping by this year or next year to do my first half marathon. So maybe in the future I will try and do it.
ReplyDeleteI did Goofy in 2008. It was my 1st half marathon and my 1st marathon. For me, it was the best place to run a marathon.
ReplyDeleteI am planning on signing up to run Goofy in 2014. It will be my 15th half and my 2nd marathon. Yup, there is something about Disney that makes it the only place I want to do a marathon! Of course, I love the Disney bling!!
I don't know if I'd ever want to run a full but if I did, the Goofy would totally be on my radar. For the time being I'm just looking forward to my first half.
ReplyDeleteI just did the Disney Full Marathon and when I signed up I was debating doing both, but I was given some great advice to do just the full for the first time and then go back and do the Goofy. It turned out to be the best advice during my training because I'm pretty sure it would have been hell if I had done that challenge.
ReplyDeleteDisneyland is having the Dumbo challenge now, probably a better first step, but I will eventually do Goofy!
I ran the full marathon this weekend for the first time and I wouldn't run a Marathon anywhere else! It is fantastic! I am thinking about doing the "goofy" next year! I just think it would be awesome!
ReplyDeleteIn the races I've run that have both a half & full, as I pass that point where I know the marathoners have (at least) half their race to go I am so thankful it is not me!! Goofy sounds like an amazing accomplishment, but I think I'll stick to 13.1!!
ReplyDeleteI'm 98% of the way to deciding to do it... But in 2015.
ReplyDeleteI plan to only do Goofy once, and so by gosh I'm going to get special bling. 2015 is the 10th anniversary of Goofy, so the bling will be a little bit more (or it should be).
2014 will just be Mickey 21 though. :) (After Hartford in October.)
I just did the Goofy Challenge this past weekend and the training is key. I actually completed my first full marathon this past October with the Chicago full through TNT and I think that was crucial in me mentally completing the Goofy Challenge. Physically, the marathon training was a great base to build on. I ran 136 miles in the month of December alone, lots of time, lots of sore muscles but it really prepared me to complete this challenge upright and somewhat happy even though I was sick. My WDW Marathon recaps are up if you want to check them out. Good luck, whatever you decide :)
ReplyDeleteI ran the Goofy this year & last year as well. This year was tough because of the heat. We came from below 0 temps. For me, it is more a mental race than physical. I know I have the miles to complete it physically but the heat made the mental part very challenging. Even though I was drinking, I was still dehydrated by the end. I finished & realized once again that I am one tough lady. :) Ran the Tinkerbell this weekend. Loved that race. Really fun!
ReplyDeleteI am not sure I will ever do a full. I joke to my friends that my interest in doing a full is in direct proportion to how long it has been since my last half: the farther away from the half, the more I want to do a full. Since I am just a few days post half, I am not even interested in attempting a full, lol. Thanks so much for your responses and advice.
