Just one long run to go?

A friend and I were talking today about how few long runs we have in these three weeks before the half.  According to the Jeff Galloway run/walk/run plan,  this Saturday and Saturday February 18th we have just three miles scheduled, leaving us just one really long (14 miles!) run before the half.  I am not sure how I feel about this….

On one hand, the pressure of just one more long run is comforting.  I have worked hard and put my time (and miles) in.  It feels good to know that it’s all downhill from here.  On the other hand, I feel like I need to keep pushing my distance.  Pushing my distance will help me both physically and mentally.  More long runs will improve my speed and endurance.  Long runs also condition me mentally to keep going.  I know the reason behind tapering it to give my legs the rest they need to perform on race day.  In a way, it still makes me feel uncomfortable.  I feel like I am going to lose some of my hard earned endurance by taking it easy now.

How are you attaching this last month of training?  What are you doing to keep your endurance up but still give your body a rest before the big day?

A dream is a wish…

  1. I have two long runs left on my schedule - 18km this coming Sunday and 20km the following Sunday. The rest of the time I am planning 2-3 other runs each week, ranging in distance and effort. I can't believe there is less than four weeks to go!!

  2. I was only going to have one long run left but after a bad run this past weekend I'm going to do two long runs and then take it easy the weekend before the race. I'm getting antsy though! Like I feel like I need to run every day, even though I know that's a bad plan!

  3. The plan has worked so far with long runs/short runs on alternate weekends with the long run mileage increasing. I'm trusting in the progress. Can't believe what I've accomplished so far! Just started running in August. I'm not fast, but I'm determined! Ran on the track for three hours Sunday- about 12 miles (had a glitch with my program after 5 miles- it said my next mile was 57 seconds and the next was 2min!) I figure if I can run on a track I can run at Disney where I'll be entertained along the way. Nervous and excited!

  4. I have at least one long run left, then two medium runs. I'm trying not to drop below 5 miles on my runs. I'm also doing a lot of strength workout still, but will drop that the week before the race.
