Race Fueling

I did my first ever ten mile run the past Saturday.  Around mile six, I could feel my stomach growling!  I was not sure what to eat for breakfast before the run.  I wanted to eat something to fuel the run, but not to much that it would upset my stomach.  I decided on a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.  I decided against my usually morning coffee because I did not want to much in my stomach.  It seems like the PB&J was not enough. I chose PB&J because it had a good mix of carbs, protein and fat.  I had several gel packs in my SPI, but could not take one of them during my run.  I did take one right before, but while running I did not feel up for a gel.  I have been thinking about what to eat during a run that would be portable enough to put into my SPIbelt to fuel my next long run.  So far, I got:
Luna Bar
Banana
Granola bar

Do you have any other ideas?  What do you carry with you to fuel your long runs?  What do you eat before a long race?

  1. When I read Kristin Armstrong's book she mentioned peanut butter sandwiches - I think she just has bread and peanut butter during her run.

  2. I don't actually eat food, but I do drink some kind of electrolyte water (I'm working finding a brand I like) and the Shot Bloks to keep me going. Otherwise I just bonk and get nauseous.

  3. I like to eat a whole wheat English muffin with peanut butter about 30 to 40 minutes before my long runs in the morning. And I generally do not skip the coffee. I just make sure that I drink it early enough that it works through my body prior to the run. I hate when I am out in my neighborhood and I have to pee. I have been experimenting with Jelly Belly sport beans to fuel on long runs but I don't really like having to chew things. I like the Clif shots the best I think. The consistency is pretty good. I usually only use fuel if my run is more than 8 miles.

  4. Mburt1029, when you do a long run in the morning, what time is that? Do you wake up, have the English muffin (wait the 30-40 minutes) and then go out to run? I haven't done any of my distances in the morning because I've been nervous to eat/run that early.

  5. I received some of these to review, and I tried one the other day. They are great! http://www.chocolateenergygel.com/ I didn't feel sick, didn't crash and the taste is great. The fact that they only have 2 ingredients (agave and cocoa) made them all the better!
